Reflections on a New Day
Wednesday, January 21st, 2009
Today he is called President Barack Hussein Obama.
Yesterday, I watched the inauguration holding a copy of my great great grandfather’s WWI registration card and the 1900 census listing the names of my ancestors, former slaves set free by the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation. I became lachrymose as I did a mental survey of the painful history that led to such a joyous day. Oh my people, thank you so much for your courage and strength to endure and survive!
This morning I sent my son a text message recounting the experiences of yesterday and ending it, “…you too can become President.” A new day has come to our country. We are poised at the cusp of a new way forward for the world. We maintain a pragmatic realism but it is no longer tainted with a pessimistic discontent about our future. America, we have done a great thing. (more…)

It’s a new year…REALLY. This month, January, is such a phenomenal month! It is the birth month of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and also the birth month of yours truly. This year, I have not only the pleasure of celebrating Dr. King’s birthday but also celebrating my 50th birthday, which - being January 31st - I have always enjoyed during Super Bowl weekend. But this year, the icing on the cake (pun intended) is not the Super Bowl - though I dearly love it - but rather, it is being able to celebrate the inauguration of our nation’s first African American president!
