Reflections on a New Day

obama-sandcastleToday he is called President Barack Hussein Obama.

Yesterday, I watched the inauguration holding a copy of my great great grandfather’s WWI registration card and the 1900 census listing the names of my ancestors, former slaves set free by the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation.  I became lachrymose as I did a mental survey of the painful history that led to such a joyous day.  Oh my people, thank you so much for your courage and strength to endure and survive!

This morning I sent my son a text message recounting the experiences of yesterday and ending it, “…you too can become President.”  A new day has come to our country.  We are poised at the cusp of a new way forward for the world.  We maintain a pragmatic realism but it is no longer tainted with a pessimistic discontent about our future.  America, we have done a great thing. Is This America….Still?

Today, as we celebrate the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. many will draw comparisons between his ministry and dream for equality for all America’s citizens and the passion and hope of President-elect Barack Obama. Few will speak of the great work and tremendous suffering of the many foot soldiers for justice who made the celebrations of today and tomorrow possible. On my mind this morning, is the great question asked over 44 years ago by a Mississippi sharecropper and civil rights activist by the name of Fannie Lou Hamer. Testifying before the Credentials Committee of the Democratic National Convention, August 22, 1964, Mrs. Hamer recounted her work and the beating she endured. I have provided a transcript of her full testimony below. Today, I shall ponder her question,”Is this America?” (more…)

It’s My Birthday! It’s My Birthday!

It’s a new year…REALLY.  This month, January, is such a phenomenal month!  It is the birth month of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and also the birth month of yours truly.  This year, I have not only the pleasure of celebrating Dr. King’s birthday but also celebrating my 50th birthday, which - being January 31st - I have always enjoyed during Super Bowl weekend.  But this year, the icing on the cake (pun intended) is not the Super Bowl - though I dearly love it - but rather, it is being able to celebrate the inauguration of our nation’s first African American president!

Unlike many children growing up, I never had a birthday party.  I grew up very poor and there were simply too many mouths to feed among my six siblings for my parents to consider such a thing.  In fact, to this day, I have never had a birthday party.  So this year, I decided it’s about time!  To celebrate, I am traveling home to Florida where I am hosting a large birthday bash at an exclusive resort hotel on a small island called Singer Island.  It’s such a lovely hotel and is where President-elect Obama stayed during his campaigning in the Palm Beaches.

I have imagined that the arrow on the stress monitor has just about gone off the dial given so many things happening in my life this month, though all of them are such wonderful events!  I consider these awesome days ahead birthday gifts from God.  I am simply overjoyed at having been allowed to live to witness these miraculous days!  Who could ask for more?
